Charitable Conversations

We’ve all at least seen a video of this. Maybe you have experienced it firsthand. You’re tabling on a campus, looking to have productive dialogue about abortion. A pro-choice person marches up and starts loudly accusing you of trying to control women, telling you that women need choices or that a fetus is just a clump of cells. You make one remark in response, and it’s met immediately with another stream of objections. As intimidating as this can be, what we don’t want to do is shut off the conversation. We want every person to see the value of human life, even the person who seems very uninterested in hearing about it. So what can we do to help the encounter move from a battle of smart remarks to a productive dialogue about the issue of abortion? Read through this infographic brochure to learn tips about how to have charitable conversations. PDF and physical print options available below.

C.A.L.V.A.R.Y

Sometimes it’s easy to be a Gospel-motivated voice For Life. You simply wait for God to open a door, and then you walk right through. But sometimes God opens doors to paths we’d rather not travel, paths with life issues we weren’t expecting, life issues we’re sure we’re really not ready for …. Like hearing a close friend has terminal cancer. Or discovering a child has been diagnosed with a life-altering disability. Or sitting next to a woman on a plane who looks you straight in the eye and says, “I used to have a niece, but now I have a nephew. And my other nephew started saying he was a girl when he was three, so he transitioned early.” It’s tempting to jump off the path, to shut your eyes and hide from the issues. Weighed down by sin and death and brokenness in a fallen world, life issues can be heavy, and responding to them with a  Gospel-motivated voice often means saying things that are both counter-cultural and unpopular. Yet … “God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). Yes, God’s Word is pretty clear: We’re called to speak the truth in love so that we might win our neighbor, and in so doing, bring him to Jesus. Read through our C.A.L.V.A.R.Y. infographic to learn more about a life-affirming approach to conversations about life issues. PDF and physical print options available below.

How Luther Nailed It On Life Issues – Download PDF

Life issues didn’t arise overnight. Their frequent connection to medical technology can make them seem like recent developments, and advances in understanding physiology and pharmaceuticals have made abortion and euthanasia more efficient and available of late. But these circumstances have been causing society’s difficulties – and providing opportunities to proclaim the Gospel – since ancient times. Even Martin Luther applied his voice to life issues! Luther promoted marriage, encouraged childbearing, and praised parenting. He concluded even unborn babies qualified as full-fledged human beings.

"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'" - John 8:12
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:14-16
"...because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." - Luke 1:78-79
"In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." - John 1:4-5
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." - Jeremiah 1:5
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." - John 10:10
"For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth." - Psalm 139:13-15
"Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his." - Romans 6:3-5
"For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth. Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of you." - Psalm 71:5-6
"And Peter said to them, 'Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.'" - Acts 2:38-39
"Jesus answered, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.'" - John 3:5

The mission of YA For Life is to equip young adults to be Gospel-motivated voices for LIFE. Are you in your 20s or 30s? If so, we want to serve you!

The Reformation was an era of recovery and faithfu The Reformation was an era of recovery and faithful proclamation of the Gospel beginning in 1517 when Dr. Martin Luther pinned his 95 theses to the doors of Castle Church in Wittenberg. This document was meant to call Pope Leo X to repent for his various doctrinal errors, but soon spread its way throughout Germany. Luther, alongside other faithful reformers, contributed the initial documents of the Lutheran Confessions including the Small and Large Catechisms and the Augsburg Confession. These documents proclaim the sweet message of the Gospel, that we are saved by grace through faith, on account of Christ Jesus. This saving faith is a free gift of God, not a result of works. Since the Reformation was a time of recovery of this blessed Gospel, the motto of the time was “Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum,” which means, “The Word of the Lord endures forever.” To learn more about The Festival of the Reformation visit https://allthehousehold.com/festival-of-the-reformation/.

This is a hard truth of the world: we are all sinn This is a hard truth of the world: we are all sinners. No one can live up to God’s standard. Thankfully, as Christians, we also know the best truth in the world! Christ died for all our sins, granting us forgiveness as a gift. There is nothing we can pay for this gift, because the blood of Jesus already paid the price.

Government, though tarnished by sin, is also a gif Government, though tarnished by sin, is also a gift from God, given to protect and uphold our lives. Through Kings Saul, David, and Solomon, God protected Israel from their enemies, provided them daily bread, and safety. Similarly, God, as the head and master of the universe, works through the order established by governments so that we may live in peace and quietness and receive our daily bread. God uses the power of the sword to bring about justice when there has been a crime and to deliver us from war. He works through farmers, taxes, and public sanitation to give us food, good roads, and clean water. We pray that God continues to work for good through governments, even imperfect ones.

One of the most important orders, established in t One of the most important orders, established in the Garden of Eden when God created Eve for Adam, is the family. The order of the family is best understood as circles of care: the husband cares for his wife and children, loving them sacrificially; the wife submits to her husband, receiving his loving care and helping him care for their children; and the children submit to their parents, receive love from them, and gladly honor and obey them. God cares for the entire family - husband, wife, and children - wrapping them in His loving mercy as He gives them daily bread for both body and soul through physical gifts and the sustenance of His Word. Through the care of the family, children receive love, daily bread, and learn the Faith.
